Farm Gulp Private Limited (Karnataka, India) is an industrial biotechnology company that extracts high-value functional molecules from agricultural by-products. It has developed a multi-stage purification platform comprising pre-filtration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration and chromatography, vacuum concentration and spray drying, and holds an Indian patent (No. 560643, granted 2025, valid for 20 years). The technology was demonstrated on areca nut wash liquor, but the target chemistry is condensed polyphenols led by catechins — the same compounds that make green tea valuable. Makinohara has an abundance of tea by-products that are unused or handled at low prices: lower-grade leaf, stems, powder, and the residue from grinding tencha and matcha. Rather than exporting Indian products, we propose bringing our purification technology to Makinohara and producing high-purity catechin and EGCG concentrates, functional tea powders and cosmetic-grade antioxidant extracts from local tea by-products, through joint development with sponsor companies. This creates a new secondary income for tea farmers, and keeps the added value and technical know-how within Makinohara. We will start with a small demonstration line, aiming for commercialisation from 2028 onwards.
