Proposal overview
Tea bushes across Shizuoka, including Makinohara, are ageing: more than 40% can no longer be picked and are simply standing in the fields. Growers would like to replant, but the long unproductive period after replanting holds them back, and if this continues these stands of old bushes will become abandoned farmland. By enhancing photosynthesis in tea seedlings to accelerate growth, we shorten the unproductive period after planting by more than a year. Adding one more picking per year raises the turnover of the tea industry as a whole, making it faster and more profitable. For this project we use Yabukita, the green tea cultivar with the largest share in Shizuoka. In future we aim to extend to matcha seedlings, for which overseas demand is strong, to add further crops and to scale up, targeting the vast agricultural market.
